Braces FAQs

How much do braces cost in Ireland?

Cost depends on the complexity of your case, your treatment goals, and which brace type you choose. Your TFBC treatment plan will include a full, itemised cost breakdown.

What does an orthodontist do?

Orthodontists specialise in correcting bite problems, misalignment and malocclusions. Both general dentists and specialist orthodontists can carry out teeth straightening treatment.

Do I need orthodontic treatment?

Orthodontics addresses bite problems, alignment issues, and difficulties with eating or speech. Crowded or crooked teeth can also affect confidence and are harder to keep clean, raising the risk of gum disease and decay. If misalignment is a concern for you or your child, it's worth discussing with your dentist.

Are braces painful?

Mild discomfort after fitting or adjustment is common and typically eases within a few days as your mouth adjusts. Over-the-counter painkillers help in the meantime

How are braces fitted?

Fixed braces are built from brackets bonded to the front of each tooth, connected by a wire. Clear aligners, by contrast, are custom-moulded plastic trays worn in a numbered sequence, each one nudging your teeth slightly closer to their final position.

How long does treatment take?

This varies by case, the severity of misalignment and the brace type both play a role  but most treatment plans run somewhere between six months (typical for cosmetic straightening or some Invisalign cases) and two years.

What age can you get braces?

Most children begin orthodontic treatment between 10 and 15, though younger children are sometimes accepted where appropriate. There's no upper age limit for adults.

Can you choose brace colours?

Traditional fixed braces often come in a choice of colours, ask at your consultation. Ceramic braces, by contrast, use tooth-coloured brackets and clear wires for a low-key look.

Can you eat normally with braces?

With fixed braces, it's best to avoid sticky, hard or crunchy foods that could damage wires, think toffee, nuts, carrots and crusty bread. Removable aligner wearers can eat normally, since the aligners come out at mealtimes. Whichever brace you choose, cutting back on sugary snacks between meals is a good habit during treatment.
